Seemingly innocuous and pointless details can be transferred into intelligence information that can damage friendly plans or intentions.
People call it "paying attention to the details", and the "observables" to deduce critical information about your projects, programs and activities.
These can expose links to critical information and help adversaries summarize the meaning of loose facts they collect.
Why elicitation works is simple. Most people want to be polite and helpful. So we answer questions even from strangers or people we don't know. We are also reluctant to with hold information, lie or be suspicious of others motives, and intentions.
The Russians use this to their advantage, and are experts at HUMINT or "human intelligence", as evidence by their willingness to send people under deep cover assignments to other nations for 20-30 years in some cases. They are very methodical and systematic in their overall approach to intelligence gathering.
It is part of their "tried and true" approach to intelligence gathering, that has succeeded for them time and time again.
Many people in the west don't fully appreciate the Russian method in espionage, until it's too late.
We must be aware of elicitation, and be ready to fully deflect questions that are intrusive and too probing regarding your job.

Huge catalogue

Stephens took her time to go through her huge catalogue of hits in a performance that spanned more than an hour.

With each record securing huge applause and singalongs, she paused at regular intervals to talk to her fans about the songs she had done and the messages that were intended in each.

"I know that a lot of my song came off as always bashing males, which seemed like I don't like men. That's not it all," she laughed.

"I love men and I do songs to express my appreciation for them too."

It's A Pity Tanya did not have enough time at Unplugged to tell her male fans how much she appreciated them, but she did touch on the issue when she sang These Streets from her 2006 Rebelution album.
She sang several songs from that Rebelution album, making sure hits from the 1990s, such as Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet and Google, were not left out.
The musician used the opportunity to discuss the discrimination of persons living with HIV in a new song that had the crowd intrigued.

While the message in the songs were of hope and inspiration, and there were great performances from Prodigal Son, Omari and Sister Sculley, the show was also plagued with poor performances, made worse by music that was too loud, in some instances.
But the negatives should not take away from the objective to raise funds for Sheldon McIntosh, whose story is a testimony many Christians should want to embrace.
On March 17, 2008, McIntosh, a self-employed young man went to a business place to collect money owed to him. Unfortunately, his visit was not to be uneventful as he crossed paths with gunmen who had also decided to call on the business place. He was shot four times, three to the head and one to the side.
According to McIntosh, seated in a wheelchair to the back of the auditorium, the shot to his side went through, but two of the shots grazed his head and one lodged in his neck, paralysing him.
Through a financial grant, McIntosh went to Cuba for one-month therapy, and has made some progress, but it is an expensive venture and he needs funds to complete the recommended six months.
"I chose to do a gospel show to raise funds," McIntosh shared with The Gleaner. Perhaps his decision was influenced by Charmaine Brown's scream of "I love you, Jesus!" as she and other women lifted and helped McIntosh to the hospital. McIntosh said it was those words that pulled him back from the dark.
Brown was one of the performers on the programme. She gave a fair performance of I Love You, Jesus and He Raised Me Up.
Young Redeem and Charmaine Limonius gave a creditable performance too.

Country-pop singer Taylor Swift thanked her fans on Wednesday for buying more than one million copies of her new album "Speak Now", making it the biggest first week seller in five years.

"I... Can't... Believe... This... You guys have absolutely lit up my world. Thank you," Swift said in Twitter message. Official Nielsen SoundScan figures showed that "Speak Now" sold 1,047,000 copies in the United States during the week ended October 31.

It was the biggest sales week for an album since rapper 50 Cent's 2005 album "The Massacre" sold 1,141,000.

The critically well-praised album -- the third from the 20 year-old singer-songwriter -- also notched up the second-largest sales week of any country album since 1991.

The bumper numbers, helped by a massive promotional push including TV appearances, advance digital releases of some of the new songs and free concerts by Swift, came after years of music industry gloom over declining album sales and piracy.

Swift, who won four Grammys earlier this year, has carved out a distinctive niche over the past two years for songs that address adolescent heart-break and the social perils of high-school.
Her album "Fearless" was the biggest selling record of 2009.
In "Speak Now", she delivers a forthright commentary on several men who have broken or messed with her heart.

The album includes songs widely believed to refer to singer John Mayer, pop star Joe Jonas, rapper Kanye West, "Twilight" actor Taylor Lautner, and music industry critics who slammed her shaky vocal performance at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
Nashville music industry writer David Ross, editor of MusicRow, said Swift's success flies in the face of conventional wisdom about the dire state of the recording industry.
"Unlike many of the top-charting female artists of today, Ms. Swift eschews tabloid behavior and asks fans to focus on her music," Ross said on Wednesday.
"In some universal way, her life contests connect with similar moments that have brushed the fabric of others as well," Ross added.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt to file for bankruptcy

Reality TV star Heidi Montag and her husband Spencer Pratt are set to file for bankruptcy.

The couple have spent all their $10 million fortune on renting a $35,000-a-month Malibu house, six cars and $3 million on Montag's failed music career and cosmetic surgery. The pair are now unable to pay a $2 million tax bill.

Pratt, 27, told US Life & Style magazine: 'We were immature, worrying too much about the famous part instead of the actual business part. In hindsight, we shouldn't have spent any of our money, we should have been low-key and saved.'

The former Hills star added: 'We spoke with a bankruptcy attorney and I've looked into unemployment cheques.'

The recently reunited couple are now living in an apartment in the grounds of Pratt's parents' home. He said: 'I feel like I'm 14 years old again, my parents are my lifeline.'

Montag, 24, added: 'Spencer's parents go to the grocery store for us once a week and that's all we get.'
